From November 26 to 28, Professor Jung Jaehwa's research team from the Department of Electro Mechanical Systems Engineering at Korea University Sejong Campus won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Control, Automation, and Information Sciences (ICCAIS 2024), hosted in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

ICCAIS is a major international forum for sharing the latest research achievements and development directions in the fields of control, automation, and information sciences. The Best Paper Award was given to only two of the top-ranked research papers.
Professor Jung Jaehwa and Kim Jaehyeok, a graduate student from the same department, received the Best Paper Award for their paper titled ‘Efficient Multi-Path Interference Mitigation in Indirect Time-Of-Flight Imaging Using Hybrid Optimization.’
The paper addresses a methodology for mitigating multi-path interference (MPI), which is an inherent source of measurement error in indirect time-of-flight (iToF) technology—a method that reconstructs 3D information by measuring distances using light signals.
In their study, the research team proposed a novel approach to effectively resolve the MPI issue by employing hybrid optimization that combines the Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) method and Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP).
Notably, the team experimentally verified that their method could maintain measurement accuracy even in environments containing translucent objects, where MPI significantly occurs, while achieving up to three times higher time efficiency compared to existing optimization methods.
Based on this technology, Professor Jung’s research team demonstrated that iToF technology could enable stable 3D reconstruction in diverse and complex environments, suggesting its potential applications in future spatial sensing technologies.
On a related note, this research was conducted with support from the Local Innovation Project based on University-Local Government Cooperation, funded by the Ministry of Education in 2024 and supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
